Subject: Removal of Vectran 300 from JYRO SLeia parachutes

Background

There has been an increasing number of incidents involving one or several lines of highly loaded canopies (of all brands) breaking during high performance turns/landings. Some of these incidents resulted in fatalities or serious injuries.

In light of recent Fluid Wings' Service Bulletin 24-400-001 which addresses the maintenance and airworthiness of parachute suspension lines, and the conversation that followed within our community, we have gathered data (survey, simulations, lad test and flight tests, etc.) and decided to review the minimum line sizes available for our products.

Based on the facts that:

• The force applied to the lines during the recovery arc can exceed the force applied to lines during the parachute deployment,
• The most recent generation of high performance, highly tapered canopies have a significantly higher load on the centre cell line groups,
• That the lines of a 7 cell canopy have a significantly higher load than those of a 9 cell,
• That high wing loading and the use of RDS (removable slider deployment system) can accelerate line wear and in some cases, cause failure on lines showing little visual wear,

we, at JYRO, have decided that, despite no incident being reported at this time on this type of parachute, the combination of Vectran 300 lines and SLeia presented a risk of premature failure.

Service Bulletin

To mitigate the risk of such an occurrence, we have removed Vectran 300 from our SLeia product.

The following mandatory actions are required to be completed:

1. JYRO SLeia canopies with Vectran 300 (V300) installed to be relined with appropriate line type V400
2. JYRO SLeia linesets made from Vectran 300 (V300) to be returned to the supplier.
